...set boundary conditions 

To solve the differential equation of each regular cell, boundary conditions have to be defined. They can be defined independently for both the input and state grid. The user can select between a constant boundary value for each boundary cell (Dirichlet boundary conditions) and periodic boundary conditions, where 'periodic' means a torus-like arrangement of the CNN cells:
The boundary cells of the input and output/state grid are half or quarter the size of a normal cell and represent the values defined by the boundary conditions. The default values of the input and state boundary cells are -1.0 (white).
